Vegetarians live longer and prosper: study

Want to live longer and keep the grim reaper at bay? A new study suggests dropping meat from your diet.

After following more than 70,000 men and women over six years, researchers at Loma Linda University in California concluded that those who followed vegetarian lifestyles had reduced rates of mortality.

After categorizing study participants into five dietary groups -- non-vegetarians, semi-vegetarians, pescatarians, lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and vegans -- authors found that vegetarian groups -- the lacto-ovo-vegetarians and the vegans -- tended to be older, more highly educated, and more likely to be married, drink less alcohol, smoke less, exercise more and be thinner.

Mortality rates were also lower among those who followed meat-free diets --12 percent lower than their carnivorous counterparts. This was particularly noteworthy among male participants, who showed a significant reduction in cardiovascular and ischemic heart disease-related deaths, researchers point out.

It’s the latest study to tout the benefits of a meat-free diet. Earlier this year, researchers from the University of Oxford found that the risk of hospitalization or death from heart disease is 32 percent lower in vegetarians than their counterparts.(AFP)

1. How are you doing?

Hey! How are you doing?” 或是”How are you?” 。不然”How’s going?”

2. What’s up?

“What’s up?” Hi! Bob. What’s up?”,那別人也不說”Not much.”,反而反問一句”What’s up?”,所以”What’s up?”

“What’s up?” 總之”What’s up?”

3. Could you do me a favor?

Could you do me a favor?”或是”Could you give me a hand?”(這算是比較正式而禮貌的講法)。 Could you do me a little favor?” (注意一下這裡用could you會比can you來的客氣一點。)

另外,”Can you help me?” 或是”May I help you?” Can you help me?”)

4. What are you studying?

What do you do for living?”(你是做什麽工作的?)或是簡單地問”What do you do?”,一般不會說成”What’s your job?”。

5. Where are you going?

所以你也可以問”Where are you heading?”,同樣都是你上哪去的意思。

6. Whats your favorite ice cream?

What’s your favorite movie?“, “Who’s your favorite movie star?”,總之,favorite之後可以接任何你有興趣的話題。

What kind of ice cream do you like the most?”,聽來是不是很冗長? Vanilla is my favorite flavor and chocolate is my second favorite.”

7. What color is your car? What’s the color of your car?

What year is your car?”(你的車是幾年份的?),”What area do you live?”(你是住哪一區的?)。 How big is your dog?”(你的狗有多大?)。

8. What’s going on?

Hey, What’s going on?”,雖然這句就完全等於”What happened?”或是”What’s up with that?”,但是美國人還是比較喜歡說”What’s going on?”,又比如人家問你說”Why is our oven broken?”,你就可以推的一乾二凈地說:”I don’t know what’s going on.”(我不知發生了什麽事。)

9. How come?

Why do you ask that?”,也就是說”It’s none of your business!”

Why is our oven broken?”換成”how come?” How come our oven is broken?”,注意一下,這二句的be動詞位置是不一樣的。

10. You want to go to see a movie?

Do you want to go to see a movie?”,但可能是太冗長了點,所以美國人才會直接說”You want to go to see a movie?”

You wanna go to see a movie?”,因為在口語中他們常會把want to省略成wanna。 Are you gonna see a movie?”

11. Anybody needs a fork?

1.Talk about who you know and what you have in common. Mutual friends, bosses, hometowns, etc.

2. Ask relevant questions about life, work, hobbies, and pop-culture. Keeping abreast of current events will provide you with great conversation builders. Lead with “What do you think of…?”, “Have you heard…?”, “What is your take on…?”, etc. Stay away from negative or controversial topics, and refrain from long-winded stories.

3. If you notice yourself getting bored with what you’re saying, stop talking, acknowledge the situation, and move on to the next topic.

4. Listen more than you talk.

5. With people you have never met before, limit stories to the last few moments of your life. Bringup casual points about your current surroundings, like the funny music playing in the background or the tasty martinis the bar is serving.

6. Know a few interesting historical facts, like this one: As a child, Albert Einstein seldom spoke. When he did, he spoke very slowly – indeed, he tried out entire sentences in his head until he got them right before he spoke aloud. Einstein did this until he was nine years old. His parents were worried about his lack of talking. But at last, at the supper table one night, he broke his silence to say, “The soup is too hot!” Greatly relieved, his parents asked why he had never said a word before. Albert replied, “Because up to now everything was in order.”

7. But realize that no one likes a person who thinks he knows everything.

8. Prolonged pauses are the best time for that interesting historical fact. Most people would rather listen to you talk about anything than listen to an awkward silence.

9. Watch your body language. People who look illatease make others uncomfortable. Act confident and comfortable, even when you’re not.

10. Let strangers interrupt you. They’re not being rude, they’re assisting you. Let them speak, and wait to be prompted before continuing your story. It’s usually a good sign that they are actually listening to you.

11. If all else fails, just talk about the weather, which always gets people riled up.

12. And have a few exit lines ready so, if needs be, you can both gracefully move on. For example, “I need to check in with a client over there”, “I skipped lunch today, so I need to grab a quick bite”, etc.

As long as you avoid anything personal, political, or controversial – at least during first encounters – and know which questions to ask, you’ll be talking the talk of certified socialite.
