台灣英文新聞-Crackdown on rogue cyclists

Police have begun to crack down on cyclists who either fail to have the right equipment or violate traffic regulations. In Kaohsiung and Changhua, they issued 20 tickets to such offenders last month. 

While cycling may be a good way to save energy and reduce carbon, more and more cyclists seem to have little regard for traffic regulations or road safety. This has led the National Police Agency to begin enforcing traffic regulations for cyclists.

In February, the Control Yuan issued a document stating it had found many cyclists riding against traffic, riding on sidewalks and other offenses. It also found that these violation had become (more serious).

Kaohsiung’s Gangshan Police Precinct in April issued more than 20 tickets and over 150 warnings. Fines for improper bicycle equipment can be NT$180 while failure to adhere to traffic regulations can lead to fines of between NT$300 and NT$600. Not carrying ID is not an excuse.

If (cyclists) are not carrying ID, we can use our handheld computers to check their identity.

Electric-powered bikes are also subject to fines for traffic violations.
